Not familiar with the paper and dice games, but there's this flash game called "Tradewinds Legends" on MSN Games and some similar sites that includes a simple financial management system with unsecured loans, debt, and interest. The banker or lender characters in the game amusingly warn you against the perils of not paying down loans aggressively, wonder if this stuff is retained by kids...

You blew my head apart comparing RPG's and investing.

GREAT post (maybe because of the ah ha moment you just gave me).

Finally I can easily relate something easy to understand (games) to people who care (seemingly) about their future. Great analogy to help younger people understand their futures!

Wow again.

I was always a big fan of games like Railroad Tycoon. I even felt nostalgic last Christmas and bought the latest version and still found it mesmerizing! Civilizations, the Sim games, etc. - Awesome stuff.

I don't know if it was the games that made me more finance oriented, or the fact that I was finance-oriented that made me enjoy those games...

Ah, so D&D geeks and PF geeks are really the same. I feel so much more at home now!

I agree there is a bit of lesson there from RPG's. Creative thinking is your best friend and the same with money (at least when I was DM it got you a hell of a lot further). If you are more creative you can save it or make more (depending on what you have to work with).

So anyone want to buy my old box of AD&D 2nd Edition materials I got in the basement? *grin*

Love that X-Files quote. Thanks for the read. Definitely a different take on the usual financial advice fare. Used to play D&D when I was a kid, and despite the prevailing sentiment at the time that it was something of an "evil" game I've always maintained it is a great tool for any kid to expand their imagination and creativity. I'll bet the majority of today's great fantasy writers all played D&D or some other similar RPG in their youth...

Wow, tons of memories...

Back then, I was deemed to be the lucky one all the time or, as the DM would sometimes say (still does for other things), I got 4 horseshoes up my a**.

This being said, I agree with this nice parallel but I won't invest based on luck.

Knowledge of the rules will always be you best friend.
