This is an unpaid review of the new social news site Tip’d. This site launched last week and so far has been quite successful with lot of people signed up, lots of voting going on and for the bloggers out there – some decent traffic potential.
What is it?
Tip’d is a website that has social networking for financial news articles – kind of like the fine ones that you find here.  What is the point of such a thing you ask? Basically the deal is that the site has a whole bunch of finance posts in its database, readers can vote for the article or against the article – the more positive votes an article gets then it will be displayed more prominently on the home page. It’s the same basic model as Digg or Reddit but for personal finance posts only – very similar to PFBuzz. One of the key ideas is that new and “hot” posts should be at the top of the page so anytime you go to the site you can see the latest, greatest personal finance posts.
Why do I want to use this?
- Quick and easy way to find some good, new financial news posts.
- Good way to find new personal finance sites.
- Easy promotion for your blog or favorite posts.
I use Digg/Stumble/etc – why do I need this site?
More focus! One thing I can’t stand about Stumble is all the extra crap like advertising sites that I have to sift through. Tip’d is probably not going to be as focussed as PF Buzz but so far the posts are very topical.
Is it a lot of work?
Nope – the easiest thing you can do is go to the site and start reading! If you want to vote on posts then you can sign up with a very quick login. If you feel really ambitious you can also add posts to the site as well (feel free to add any from this site!).
Please note that you can look at the most popular posts under the published category (the home page defaults to this) or click on ‘upcoming news’ for the newer posts.
What needs improvement
I would suggest that they steal the ‘time frame’ idea from PFBuzz and show the popular posts by time period, ie by day, by week, by month etc.
Wow, we already have a question from a reader about this…let’s take a look
Mike, I just read your review of Tip’d and while I agree that Tip’d looks pretty good – didn’t you just take your rather glowing review of PFBuzz from a few months ago, change the name and links and then just repost it?
Mike:Â Â Ummm……..no more questions!Â

Mike you are a funny guy
Oh, don’t give them any idea
Just checked it out (read some articles and submitted yesterdays post – if anyone is on the site, tip “Is the Current Market Drop Bad, Good or Irrelevant?”
. Looks interesting, but as you say, VERY similar to PFBuzz.
It’ll be interesting to see if niche Digg sites catch on…
You know, it occurs to me the one thing the money blogosphere doesn’t have* that other niches I follow (like politics and Irish blogs) have is an annual awards ceremony. Maybe we should knock together some awards categories and host a ceremony in Waterloo. Or maybe moneybloggers are too frugal to go to one.
(* or maybe it does and nobody asked me to vote).
Cheap – I tipd!
Guinness – The Money Gardener did the Golden Blog awards last year – hopefully he will do another one!
